Commissioning

Systematically configuring, testing, tuning, and documenting an installed system so it verifiably performs as designed — the step between installed and working.

Commissioning is where an AV or security system becomes usable: DSP tuning, camera focus and framing, door timing, scene levels, network settings, control programming, and a documented test of every function. It is also the line item most often cut under budget pressure, which is why so many systems are technically complete and practically disliked.

Insist on a commissioning record — what was tested, measured values, and settings applied — plus the configuration files. It is the baseline that makes future troubleshooting a comparison instead of a re-discovery.

DSP: The processor that mixes, routes, and conditions every audio signal in a room — gating microphones, cancelling echo, and applying EQ and limiting before audio reaches the amplifier or far end.
Cable Certification: Testing every installed cable run with a certification-grade tester against the TIA performance standard, producing a per-link pass/fail record of length, insertion loss, crosstalk, and return loss.
As-Built: Documentation reflecting what was actually installed — final device locations, cable routes, labelling, IP addresses, and configuration — rather than what was originally drawn.
Punch List: The itemised list of incomplete or defective work identified at walkthrough that must be corrected before final acceptance and payment.
