Nits
Also called: cd/m², candela per square metre
A measure of display brightness. Typical office displays produce 300–500 nits; window-facing and outdoor displays need thousands.
Brightness is the specification most often got wrong in South Florida. A 350-nit panel that looks brilliant in a showroom washes out in a glass-walled lobby with afternoon sun, and no calibration recovers it. Storefront and window-facing installations generally need 2,000–5,000 nits plus a high-contrast surface treatment.
More nits is not free: brightness drives heat, power, and enclosure design. For outdoor and semi-outdoor work the display, its ventilation, and its ingress rating get specified together.
