Matrix Switcher
Also called: AV matrix, video matrix
A device that routes any of several video inputs to any of several outputs independently, letting multiple sources appear on multiple displays at once.
A matrix is what separates a boardroom from a bar. Eight inputs to eight outputs means each display can show a different source, or all can show one, under control system command. Sizing is about growth: matrices are priced in steps, and the cost of going one size up now is far below the cost of replacing a full one in three years.
Matrices centralise both capability and risk. They belong on a UPS, in a ventilated rack, with EDID and HDCP behaviour documented per port — because when a matrix misbehaves, every display in the building shows it at once.
