IP Camera

A network camera that encodes video onboard and streams it over Ethernet, typically powered by PoE and recorded by an NVR or video management software.

Resolution is the least interesting specification. What determines whether footage is usable in an incident is pixels on target at the distance you care about, low-light performance, wide dynamic range for glass-door entrances, and frame rate — a 4K camera at 5 fps loses the moment a face turns.

Cameras are also endpoints on your network, which means firmware, credentials, and segmentation are part of the install. Default passwords and a flat network are how camera fleets end up in botnets, so cameras belong on their own VLAN with managed firmware updates.

ONVIF
An open standard for IP video devices that lets cameras from one manufacturer work with recorders and video management software from another.
VMS
Software that records, stores, searches, and distributes video from many cameras, and hosts the analytics and access rules on top of them.
H.265
A video compression standard that delivers similar quality to H.264 at roughly half the bitrate, cutting storage and bandwidth for surveillance.
VLAN
A logical network segment on shared physical switching, used to isolate device groups — cameras, AV, guest Wi-Fi, corporate data — from each other.
PoE
Delivery of DC power and data over the same Ethernet cable, so cameras, access points, phones, and displays need no local outlet.
IP Rating
A two-digit code for a device's resistance to solids and liquids — IP66 meaning dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. IK ratings separately grade impact resistance.
