IDF / MDF
Also called: Intermediate Distribution Frame, Main Distribution Frame, telecom room
The hierarchy of network rooms in a building: the MDF is the main room where service enters and the core lives; IDFs are floor or zone closets that aggregate nearby horizontal runs back to it.
IDFs exist because copper horizontal runs are limited to 100 m including patch cords. Their placement decides cable quantities for the life of the building, so an IDF sited for convenience rather than geometry produces runs that are out of spec or wildly long.
Telecom rooms need what any equipment room needs and rarely gets: dedicated cooling, conditioned power, a ground bar, lockable access, and enough clearance to work. A closet shared with a mop sink is a future outage with a date on it.
