BYOM
Also called: Bring Your Own Meeting, USB room
A room design where a guest laptop drives the meeting, using the room's camera, microphones, and speakers over a single USB-C connection rather than a dedicated room system.
BYOM is the pragmatic answer to platform sprawl. When one room hosts Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, and a client's own platform, tying the room to one appliance guarantees friction; presenting the room as a big USB peripheral works with every platform equally. One cable at the table carries video, audio, and often laptop charging.
Its weaknesses are predictable: no room calendar, no one-touch join, and reliance on whatever the visitor's laptop does with peripherals. Many of our clients land on hybrid rooms — a native appliance for internal meetings plus a BYOM path for guests — which costs a little more in switching and pays for itself in avoided support calls.
