0-10V Dimming

Also called: 0-10V control, analog dimming

An analog dimming method where a low-voltage control signal from 0 to 10 volts tells a driver or ballast what output level to produce, separate from the load wiring.

Because control is separate from power, 0-10V handles large loads and long runs well and is common in commercial LED fixtures. It is simple, cheap, and widely supported — the reason it persists despite newer digital protocols.

Its limits are addressability and consistency: a 0-10V circuit dims as one group, and low-end behaviour varies between manufacturers, so mixed drivers on one circuit can dim unevenly or drop out at the bottom. Where individual fixture control or reliable deep dimming is needed, DALI is the better answer.

A digital lighting protocol where every fixture has an address on a two-wire bus, allowing individual control, grouping in software, and status reporting back to the controller.

A saved combination of light levels, colour temperatures, and shade positions across a space, recalled by one button, schedule, or sensor event.

Two dimming types matched to transformer technology: ELV for electronic transformers and LED drivers, MLV for magnetic ones. Mismatching dimmer to load causes flicker, buzz, or failure.
